Common Packing Mistakes When Moving

Moving marks a new chapter. Often, during that transition, challenges come along the way. Here at Superior Storage, located at 3821 McCann Road, Longview, TX 75605, we understand the challenges of moving and how proper packing can make a difference. In this blog, we will have compiled a list of common packing mistakes people make and how to avoid them.

Decluttering Before Packing

One common mistake we see is not sorting through your items before putting them in specific containers. When you skip over this step it makes storing your items easier, but the consequences comes when you want to retrieve your items. You will need to sort through items you would otherwise thrown out or could have donated.

Before putting your items in containers, take the time to declutter. Start by sorting items into three categories. What you plan to keep, what you plan to toss out, and what items can be donated. This helps reduce the number of items you will need to properly pack and also gives back to the community.

Using Lower Quality Packing Containers

We strongly recommend against using old cardboard boxes for your next move. These old used boxes can collapse, tear, and break down. You will need to take more time out of your move to deal with the broken boxes and clean up the mess that it has caused. Instead, consider investing in sturdy moving boxes, bubble wrap, and strong packing tape.

Do Not Overstuff Moving Containers

It may be tempting to overfill your items into a cardboard box to save a few trips and save money on the extra container, but we advise against it. When you do this, it makes cardboard boxes heavier and more difficult to carry. Overpacked boxes are also more likely to break, potentially risking causing damage to your items. Make sure to distribute the weight evenly when packing. Start by placing the heavier items at the bottom and lighter ones on top. Depending on the size of the container, consider the weight limit of how much it can contain.

Not Labeling Boxes

Unlabeled boxes can lead to confusion when trying to locate your items.  Making it harder to find items in a timely fashion. Start off by labeling each box and what you plan to store in them. You’ll save time and avoid frustration when settling into your new home. Mark them with a permanent marker of the category of items. For example, label all kitchen items as "kitchen." This will help when you are unloading your items and need to know where to place your items.

Not Packing A Personal Bag

After labeling and packing all your items many people forget to pack a bag with all the essentials they might need. Think about what items you use daily, like toiletries, extra clothes, and important documents you might need. Packing these items will prove useful when you realize you need them. Last thing anyone wants to do is go searching through already sorted boxes to find your items.

The Possibility of Breaking Items

When packing, think about other items that will require more of your attention. Glassware, dishes, and vases, and other delicate items will need to be stored properly before putting them away. Failure to do so can result in items breaking while you are moving. Consider wrapping fragile items individually in bubble wrap or some sort of protective container.

Procrastinating Packing

Leaving packing to the last minute leads to rushed decisions and disorganization, making moving days more stressful.

Start packing well in advance. Create a packing schedule and tackle one room at a time. This organized approach ensures you don’t forget anything.

Not Measuring Furniture and Doorways

Attempting to move large furniture or appliances without measuring can lead to frustrating situations where items don’t fit through doors or hallways. Your furniture may not fit through the doorways in your new home. It is always best to disassemble large pieces rather than cause damage to your walls and doorways
